In 2012, a project was undertaken to provide a GPS location and a picture of every tombstone within Elk Cemetery. At that time, a link was provided on this page that allowed a visitor to enter a name and see the location of that stone, along with information transcribed from the stone. This relied on a Google product which has since been discontinued.
As a temporary solution, we provide the following link which achieves nearly the same result:
When you click on this page, enter the name of the person you are looking for into the search box in the upper right hand corner of the page, then click on the magnifying glass icon. Any grave which matches that text will be represented with a dot. You can then click on the dot to zoom to the graves represented by those dots. After you have zoomed in, the dots will be replaced with blue place markers on which you can click to obtain the information, and see the specific information about those graves.
If you click on the blue place marker, you will be able to see additional information and a picture of the monument taken at the time of the study.
You will note that only those graves which had been established by June, 2012, and those which could be identified (via readable information on the corresponding monument) are discoverable at this time. This is because the sophisticated and expensive equipment to provide the location information was only available for a short time.
Some information, but not all, has been updated over time.
The information in this project has also been added to the corresponding grave records on FindAGrave.com. Additional information can be found here: FindAGrave – Elk Cemetery
